FSU Clinical Professor and Co-Director of Externship Programs

THE FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF LAW invites applications for the position of Clinical Professor and Co-Director of Externships, to begin in June 2019. The position is non-tenure track but is a specialized Teaching Faculty position eligible for long-term renewable contracts.

The Co-Director oversees externships at Judicial, Federal/State/Local Government, Public Interest, International, Corporate, and Law Firm placements. The faculty member will also teach a civil pretrial or other practice skills simulation course. Duties include coordinating externship supervision with approximately 100 diverse externship sites, reviewing student applications and placing them in externships, counseling students, and teaching weekly Perspectives courses for externship programs. The Co-Director is responsible for engaging in regular outreach to existing and potential externship sites, reviewing weekly journal submissions from students participating in externships, serving as the contact person for student concerns and inquiries regarding externship placements, and ensuring that all externships comply with ABA Standards for Legal Education as well as University and College of Law rules and regulations.

Candidates must have a J.D. degree from an accredited law school and at least 5 years of experience teaching and/or practicing law (preferably both), and must be a licensed attorney in a United States jurisdiction (a state or the District of Columbia). Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal relationship skills, organizational skills, as well as effective communication and problem-solving skills. A commitment to academic excellence and the ability work effectively with faculty and staff colleagues, students, and external constituencies such as site supervisors (judges, general counsel, partners and senior attorneys), alumni and other potential employers, is expected.

A Florida Bar license is strongly preferred. Teaching experience in externships, or another professional/skills capacity, and substantial law practice experience in more than one field, is also preferred.

This position requires successful completion of a criminal history background check. The background check will be conducted as authorized and in accordance with University Policy 4-OP-C-7-B11.
