HARVARD LAW SCHOOL invites applications for a full-time clinical faculty member who will also serve as faculty director of the Law School’s Health Law and Policy Clinic. The faculty appointment may be a Clinical Professor of Law, Assistant Clinical Professor of Law, or Visiting Assistant Clinical Professor of Law, depending on the candidate’s extent and type of experience.

The Health Law and Policy Clinic:

The Faculty Director works independently and with faculty, staff and students of the Health Law and Policy Clinic and the Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation (CHLPI) to teach about and advocate for legal, regulatory, and policy reforms to expand access to high-quality healthcare; to reduce health disparities; and to promote more equitable and effective health and public health systems. The Health Law and Policy Clinic currently consists of three key programs: 1) Health Care Access; 2) Impact Litigation; and, 3) Whole Person Care.

The Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation (CHLPI) is comprised of the Health Law and Policy Clinic (HLPC) and the Food Law and Policy Clinic (FLPC). Together, the clinics are at the forefront of legal research, policy advocacy, and impact litigation to create more equitable and effective health and food systems, while teaching and mentoring students to become more skilled, innovative, and thoughtful practitioners. The two clinics work to advance a shared mission, collaborate on relevant projects, and share office space and administrative staff.

This position represents a unique opportunity to play a leadership role within Harvard Law School’s clinical program, to join a dynamic public interest clinic teaching health and public health law and policy, and to practice in burgeoning areas of state and national importance.

Role and Responsibilities:

The Faculty Director will work with clinic staff and students to manage the legal work and operations of the Clinic. The Faculty Director will supervise clinical instructors, staff attorneys, clinical fellows and administrative team members and will have primary responsibility for identifying and leading various projects and initiatives of the clinic as well as fund-raising operations.

The Faculty Director will teach or co-teach clinical courses relating to the work of the Clinic and may have the opportunity to teach additional courses at the Law School, as proposed and approved through regular curricular planning and approval processes.

The Faculty Director will coordinate with the faculty director and clinical staff of the Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic to pursue programming and cross-cutting initiatives of mutual interest to the Clinics, the shared objectives of CHLPI, and of benefit to HLS students. The Faculty Director may also have opportunities to collaborate with other complementary HLS clinics and relevant programs from across Harvard’s schools and disciplines. Based on the experience and qualifications of the candidate, the Faculty Director may serve as co-director or associate director of CHLPI.

The Faculty Director will understand and incorporate racial justice and equality goals into the teaching and clinical initiatives and work.

Beyond CHLPI, the clinical faculty member will have access to the many opportunities for engagement, collaboration, and community through the wider clinical program and intellectual life of Harvard Law School.  As a faculty member, the successful candidate will have opportunities to participate in various faculty programs, initiatives, and (unless the appointment is to a visiting position) governance.

Qualifications

All applicants must have:

• A minimum of five years of practice experience in health law and policy.
• A J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Admission to the Massachusetts bar, OR
• Eligibility to practice and supervise students under Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Rule 3:04.

Legal Qualifications

• Expertise and substantial public interest lawyering experience, in particular, with issues relating to health law and policy. 
• A commitment to community-based legal advocacy. This commitment can take many forms but requires a demonstrated record of public interest lawyering that is responsive, adaptive, and creative. 

Teaching Qualifications

• A track record of successful clinical teaching as demonstrated by student engagement, learning and evaluation, OR
• Significant experience teaching and mentoring law students or junior lawyers in non-clinical education contexts. 
• A record of contributing to scholarship, and/or legal training programming and materials, and/or other types of writing in service of the profession. 

Management and Strategy Skills

• Ability to set vision and direction for clinical law practice and pedagogy.
• A record of effective supervision of team members and support for individual practitioner growth and development.
• Meaningful experience in program or project leadership.
• Demonstrated practice and commitment to building an inclusive working and learning environment.
